What is Makaton?

Makaton is a communication programme that uses signs, symbols, and spoken language to support communication. When using Makaton, only the key words are signed example: nouns, verbs, and adjectives alongside speech rather than every word.

At our school, we use Makaton throughout the day to help pupils develop communication, confidence, and independence in an inclusive and supportive environment. Staff use signs alongside speech during lessons, routines, songs, and social activities to support understanding and encourage participation.

We also have a weekly “Sign of the Week” which is shared across the school to help pupils, and staff learn and use Makaton together. To further support our children and family communication skills we have some helpful resources below. We hope these videos are helpful and remember, repetition and consistency are key in learning Makaton.

Kind regards
